Abstract in English

Developing graphene - polymer composites for SLS applications

Results

The main goal of this project was to produce polymer - graphene composite powders for SLS printing. The overall expected outcome was to obtain electrically conductive parts with good structural integrity. In addition, this feasibility study was conducted to evaluate whether polymer-graphene composite powders could be obtained with a scalable process and could potentially allow tunable loading of graphene into the polymer powder which is a limitation when using other techniques. Good particle size, spherical morphology and graphene retention in the matrix were desired outcomes.

This feasibility study yielded in very promising results. Spherical particles were produced using polymer extrusion. In addition, there was good graphene retention in the matrix which was visible in micrographs. Further work needs to be done on improving particle size for efficient particle extraction. To fulfill the overall goal of obtaining conducting powders for printing electrically conductive parts another approach was used - coating of SLS particles with graphene. The coating of the particles was very successful and the limit for retaining graphene on the particles while preserving morphology and particle separation was identified. Electrically conductive parts with very good structural integrity were successfully printed using standard PA settings. The
parts were integrated in simple functional electrical circuits with big success.

It is worth mentioning that a clean process was used to produce these powders, free of toxic chemicals and zero byproducts.

All in all, most of the feasibility study was successful, where most objectives have been achieved and the results are very promising towards the continuation of the study, publishing scientific articles, as well as launching of a product. The conductivity achieved to the printable limit was better than what has been reported in literature so far and to our knowledge there are no conductive polymer-based powders target available in the market, especially for the range of applications that this powder can target.
