Abstract in English

Graphene-enhanced bio-based coatings for corrosion protection of hot-dip galvanized steel

Graphene has unique mechanical, electrical and barrier properties that make it attractive for anti-corrosion coating applications. According to our preliminary study, an addition of graphene flakes in the polymers can improve the film's barrier properties. In this study, graphene will be integrated into SSAB's patented green anti-corrosion coating (GreenCoat) - a formulation to further improve the performance of corrosion coating on hot-dip galvanized steel.

The project's strategy is to obtain a good dispersion of graphene flakes in the GreenCoat formulation which will then be applied to hot-dip galvanized steel substrates and then evaluated. The better the dispersion quality, the more cost effective is the graphene-containing color. Therefore, the biggest challenge in this preliminary study is to develop a suitable solvent dispersion of graphene which can be easily blended into the paint. In addition, the coating formulation used to develop graphene-based anti-corrosion coatings is bio-based; SSAB GreenCoat. Therefore, it aims at an environmentally friendly and cost-effective anti-corrosion coating.

The two project partners will contribute their core competencies within this project. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB (RISE) will contribute to the graphene dispersion and coating formulation, while SSAB will handle coating application and testing. RISE has a broad experience of surface modification and dispersion of graphene and SSAB has extensive experience in industrialisation of dispersion coatings, evaluation and marketing. If the project succeeds, more investments will be required for the commercialization of such graphene-containing green anti-corrosion paint. But SSAB's GreenCoat® is already on the market and has been proven to work for outdoor and corrosion protection of hot-dip galvanized steel. The development of a new graphene-based coating will support SSAB's goal of increasing its market share and its potential in this area.

Results
The two project partners, RISE (RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB) and SSAB (SSAB AB) closely collaborated in the incorporation of graphene into the clear coat and testing.

In this study, graphene is incorporated into SSAB patented green anti-corrosion coating GreenCoat formulation to study the performance of graphene containing anti-corrosion coating on hot-dip galvanized steel.
Our result showed that incorporation of graphene flakes into the GreenCoat formulation resulted in improved anticorrosion performance when applied on hot-dip galvanized steel substrates.
